History

In 2006, when biotechnology and specialty pharmaceutical companies from the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) countries began to explore the possibilities of using domestic CROs to strategically expedite their R&D programs cost-effectively, the founders of Frontier BioSciences Inc. (FBSI) saw opportunities to build a China-based CRO which would meet international standards.  FBSI was then created by a team of industry experts with extensive scientific and business backgrounds from the USA and China.  The company began to operate in Germantown, Maryland and Chengdu, China.

By the end of 2006, FBSI acquired a significant stake in WestChina Pharmatech (WCFP), formerly known as the National Chengdu Center for Safety Evaluation of Drugs, a local CRO in Chengdu, China, founded and supported by the largest medical institute in the world, West China (Huaxi) Hospital, and a recipient of grants from the Chinese Ministry of Sciences and Technologies.

Since formalizing the FBSI-WCFP partnership in 2007, FBSI has invested heavily in staff, facilities, and equipment.  To complement the local staff, the company began employing senior level scientists and managers from the U.S. to manage operational and study management activities, and conduct extensive training in U.S. FDA GLP compliance.  Subsequently, the joint venture received AAALAC International accreditation based on its established animal care programs.  In the course of conducting programs funded by the U.S. Government, the company has also received NIH OLAW assurances, and has been inspected and approved by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

In 2009, Frontier attracted major investment funding from a renowned international institutional investor.  The company has expanded its senior management team  through the hiring of CRO industry veterans, and has doubled technical staff to meet market needs.
